The Golden Age of the Pendulum Clock

From 12 September to 28 November 2004 the Dutch Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn will host a most prestigious exhibition called 'opwindende klokken - de gouden eeuw van het slingeruurwerk' (the golden age of the pendulum clock). This show will give a unique survey of the application of the pendulum, invented by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens, in The Netherlands, France and England.

Christiaan Huygens, mathematician, physicist and astronomer with great international reputation, was born exactly 375 years ago in The Hague. On December 25Th 1656 he succeeded in applying the symmetric movement of the pendulum as regulator for a clock. This achieved accuracy of clocks meant a historic breakthrough in the measurement of time .....
